Protect Your Facilities Against Damage Caused by Lightning Strikes.

The Advanced Lightning Protection System (ALPS) from Critical Facility Group is a solution that effectively protects critical facilities, locations and assets from direct lightning strikes and the resulting damage and downtime.

Maximum Protection

The ALPS system effectively lowers the likelihood of a direct lightning strike within a given area to virtually zero. It does this by building up a space charge shield over its zone of protection. The result is that any asset within the zone no longer presents itself as a path of least resistance to lightning. If a thundercloud overhead discharges lightning, it will strike outside the zone of protection instead.

Reliable Failsafe Device

The effectiveness of the ALPS system is evidenced by its track record. In over 40 years and in multiple large deployments around the world, ALPS technology has had a flawless record of zero strikes to assets under protection.

Stellar Track Record

The ALPS tower also functions as a failsafe device in the unlikely event that lightning activity occurs over the zone. In such an instance, the tower is designed to absorb the strike, then work in tandem with complementary solutions from Critical Facility Group to ensure proper grounding and surge protection for the assets within the zone of protection.

Lightning Strikes can Cause Substantial Harm to Your Processes.

For nearly three centuries, the only protection from lightning has been the rudimentary lightning rod invented by American founding father Benjamin Franklin to provide lightning a passage to the ground. However, this traditional technology does not protect facilities against the wide-ranging damage caused by a lightning strike.

For example, lightning strikes can cause an electrical surge or electromagnetic pulse that permanently compromises sensitive microelectronics and affects a manufacturing line’s sensors and equipment. Or it could ruin a whole batch of manufactured electronics without any visible signs that they no longer work as designed.

In 1969, the Apollo 12 lunar mission was put in jeopardy when the rocket was struck twice by lightning. Following the incident, NASA scientist Roy Carpenter made it his mission to find an effective countermeasure against lightning strikes. What he invented became the technology behind the current ALPS system from Critical Facility Group.

Model R

Unparalleled Performance Lightning Rods

The Advanced Lightning Protection System (ALPS) from Critical Facility Group is a solution that effectively protects critical facilities, locations, assets and people from direct lightning strikes and the resulting damage and downtime.

The ALPS Model-R lightning rod was designed and developed by CFG’s Design Engineers with the advice and counsel of CFG Panel of Experts. The design challenges the conventional lightning rod design invented by Benjamin Franklin over three centuries ago. The new design’s interchangeable tips provide flexibility and the specially designed Coupler acheives Positive Bonding between the rod and the base.

Model R is a lightning rod and forms part of an external lightning protection system that protect a structure from lightning damages by collecting flashes and guiding the currents via conductor tape/cable connected to it to safely disperse into the low resistance ground electrode.

Unique Features

  • Coupler with unique feature to form positive bonding between rod and conductor tape.
  • Ergonomic design for best grip / handles for installation / replacement.
  • Replaceable head tip with different designs to cater to various preferences of customers.
  • Ease of replacing/changing the head tip without the need to replace/change the rod.
  • Crown: hybrid for sharp & blunt tips, 4 sharp tips.
  • Sharp: for customer who prefer sharp tip.
  • Blunt: for customers who prefer blunt tip.
  • Multipoint: optimum all-round coverage to collect lightning termination from all directions.
  • Together with CFG’s unique coupler, the Model R ensures optimum bonding to help achieve the required 0.2ohm or better bonding resistance as required by IEC62305.

Multi Points Lightning Protection Device

Providing Multipoint Layers of Protection for Critical Applications.

The Multi Points Lightning Protection Device is a lightning protection concept engineered to provide multipoint layers of protection for critical applications.

In its primary mode, the Multi Points Lightning Protection Device lowers the risk of direct strikes with its multipoint ionizing capability that helps to keep the local electric field low, thus making the protected site less likely to be struck directly by lightning.

Reliable Protection Capable of Weathering Through Intense Storms.

Under intense storm conditions, the Multi Points Lightning Protection Device functions as a highly effective air terminal, safely collecting any strikes it cannot prevent. In contrast to wire brush devices or single point air terminal that are often left ineffective after a single strike, the Multi Points Lightning Protection Device continues to reduce the risk of subsequent strikes with its multiple points construction.

The Multi Points Lightning Protection Device unique design and geometry also enable it to collect intense incoming strikes from any direction, providing a controlled termination of lightning strikes compared to standard air terminals.

The Multi Points Lightning Protection Device can also be used in tandem with ALPS installations when used as a lightning termination mitigation component.
